One of my favorites in this collection. Both David and Marat's lives were fascinating, and while I was never a fan of his grandiose history paintings ("Oath of the Horatii," "Oath of the Tennis Court" etc.) I can appreciate the quiet tragedy of "Death of Marat." I love the story behind this painting: how David inserted Charlotte Corday's second letter in Marat's hand, how David likens Marat to Christ, how David had to paint the painting in time for Marat's state funeral ...
